The best things to do in Rhodes in August 2026
Best activities
We’re blessed with so many beautiful beaches in Rhodes, and with an average sea temperature of 25 degrees in August, you’re visiting at the perfect time to make the most of them. By hiring a car you can easily experience several stunning beaches during your trip – we’ve created this guide to help you find the best beaches with convenient parking no matter where part of the island you’re staying in. Just make sure to seek shade during the hottest parts of the day – most beaches will have parasols you can rent.
And if swimming and watersports don’t quench your thirst for the Aegean Sea, take a boat trip! There are plenty of providers offering boat trips both around the island, with stops for diving and swimming, or further afield to the island of Symi or even Marmaris in Turkey.
Everything looks at its best bathed in sunshine, and the same is true for Rhodes’ most iconic tourist attractions. Experience true history at the Palace of the Grand Master (pictured above) and St George’s Bastion in Rhodes Old Town or climb the steps to the Acropolis in Lindos, but be aware there will likely be queues, so try to go early in the morning or in the evening when it’s cooler and quieter.
As it’s peak tourism season, the Old Town will be buzzing in the evenings, so it’s a great time to wander the cobbled streets and try out different restaurants for dinner.
Events
Do you like wine? Do you like festivals? If you answered yes to both, you’ll love the annual Wine Festival in the village of Embonas. Located on a hillside towards the centre of the island, Embonas is Rhodes’ wine capital, home to numerous vineyards, and its wine prowess is celebrated with a festival of local wine tasting as well as local cuisine and traditions.
While the 2026 date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s typically held in late August, so keep your eyes peeled.
Local traditions
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated on the 15th August. This is a major religious festival with feasts held in the villages of Rhodes, especially Kremasti in the north-east of the island.
Make the most of your visit
By now, you’ve seen that Rhodes has so much to see and do, and the best way to experience as much of the island as possible is to hire a car to get around.
In fact, it’s highly recommended by the official Visit Rhodes website, especially if you want to visit beaches or see more traditional and authentic parts of the island inland or in the south. Bus networks are limited and stuffy in peak temperatures, and taxi fares can quickly become far more expensive than renting a car for the week if you take several trips.
